The home of the best limestone from around the world.
Limestone is a sedimentary rock that is made from the mineral calcite, which came from the beds of evaporated seas and lakes and contains shells of marine organisms. These fossil-like can show within the surface of the stone. Pure limestone is almost white, but because of naturally occurring impurities it is most commonly cream or ochre through to light grey and blue grey. It is durable and commonly occurs in easily accessible surface exposures.
Limestone is ideal for modern architecture and was a popular building block in the Middle Ages in areas where it was readily available. Many Medieval castles and churches in Europe are made of Limestone. The material was also very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Limestone is readily available and easy to cut into blocks or work into more elaborate carvings. It is also long lasting and stands up well to exposure.
