THE HOME OF THE BEST MARBLE
FROM AROUND THE WORLD.
Marble is a metamorphic rock used for decorative purposes
and is usually polished. Marble is derived from the Greek
word ‘Marmareos’, meaning glistening. As the favourite
medium for ancient Greek and Roman architects and sculptors,
today marble has become a symbol of tradition and refined taste.
The durability of marble is most evident in the construction
of the Parthenon in 447 BC in Pentelican white Greek marble.
This temple is almost 2,500 years old and was almost
destroyed by foreigners on at least two occasions – the
worst being in 1640 when the building was used for storing
gunpowder, which was ignited by a thunderbolt resulting in
the collapse of a large part of the temple. However, the
temple remains today.
Characterised by subtle or dramatic ‘veins’, Marble’s
extremely varied and colourful patterns make it a favourite
decorative material in modern architecture. Marble is
available in a wide range of colours from almost pure
white to cream through to chocolate and pink through
to red, green, grey and even black.
