The home of the best travertine from around the world.

Travertine is a sedimentary rock and is easily recognised by pitted holes and troughs in its surface. These ‘imperfections’ occur naturally and give the product an aged look. Travertine is sometimes known as Travertine Marble or Travertine Limestone. While these are the same stone, they are neither Marble nor Limestone. Extensive deposits are available from Tivoli, Italy, near Rome. In fact, Travertine derives its name from its home town. In ancient Roman times Tivoli was known as Tibur. The ancient Latin name for the stone was ‘Lapis Tiburtinus’ meaning Tibur Stone, which over time has become known as Travertine.

Travertine is one of the most frequently used stones in modern architecture and works well with modern interior colour schemes. It is commonly seen in flooring or wall cladding, especially in wet areas. Notable buildings that were constructed largely of Travertine include the Colosseum in Rome and the Sacré-Coeur Basilica in Paris. Travertine can be polished to a smooth, shiny finish and comes in a variety of colours from creams and beige to coffee and coral red.
